Practical CGE Modelling: Software
GAMS
The course uses the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) software. The text editor used is GAMSIDE (included with the GAMS programme) and all data are handled using GAMS Data Exchange (GDX) and MS Excel. It is not necessary to buy GAMS for the course; this course only requires the Demo/Student version of GAMS.
The GAMS software can be download from here. Please ensure you download the correct version for your PC.
We will not use GAMS Studio for the courses in 2018-19, so ensure you choose to install the GAMSIDE version.
Operating System
The instructions assume you are using a PC with the Windows operating system (v 7 or later) either on a Windows PC or when running Boot Camp on an Apple Mac.
If you are a user of the Apple Mac or LINUX operating systems there are versions of GAMS compatible with those systems; we cannot guarantee the material we provide will always work with the Apple Mac or LINUX operating systems. (In the future GAMS Studio may help us relax this constraint.)
Microsoft Office
This course uses MS Excel for providing (some) model data and for downloading results data and is very useful for tabulating and graphing model results. A word processor, e.g., MS Word, will be needed to complete the assignments.
MOODLE
MOODLE is accessed through the internet. During the the course participants will have access to all the course materials (course programme, video presentations, PowerPoint slide shows, various ‘how to’ guides, technical and teaching documents, practical (CGE and other) computer exercises, and GAMS libraries containing all the GAMS codes and databases used during the course).
MOODLE also provides an asynchronous forum for interacting with the instructors and other participants.
